Hydroblasting, water jetting or water blasting are terms commonly used when describing water as the tool to do surface preparation. The use of water is a technique for cleaning surfaces, which relies solely on the energy and force of water striking a surface to achive its cleaning effect. In principle abrasive is not used in waterblasting systems, hence, the problems caused by dust pollution and by the disposal of spent abrasives are eliminated.

Surface condition after waterblasting

Flash rust : 

When large areas are waterblasted, flash rusting which diminish the original surface standard may occur, before painting can be carried out. The degree of flash rusting depends on many factors, such as humidity level, temperature and the length of time the surface is exposed.

Degrees of flash rust :

Light flash rust : small quantities of light tan-brown rust will partially discolor the original steel surface. The discoloration may be evenly distributed, or in patches, but it will not be heavy enough to mark an object brushed against the areas.

Medium flash rust :
A layer of light tan-brown rust will cover the original steel surface. This layer may be evenly distributed or in patches, but it will be heavy enough to easily mark objects brushed against the areas.

Heavy flash rust :
a heavy layer of dark tan-brown rust will be completely covering the original surface. This layer will be evenly distributed and will easily mark objects brushed against the areas.

Temperature rise :
The use of high pressure water blaster equipments will cause the temperature of the steel to rise. The increase of temperature of the steel surface can be substantial, depending on the pressure of the equipment used and will help waterblasted surfaces to dry off faster, hence reducing the degree of flash rusting.

Removal of foreign elements :

The use of water has the advantage of removing oil and grease from the surface along with salt deposits. This is a major plus point of high pressure water blaster equipments. The grey, brown to black discoloration of corroded and pitted steel after waterblasting cannot be removed by further blasting. Studies shows that this thin film consists of mainly ferric oxide, which is an inert material. As it is tightly adherent, it does not present a serious contamination problem.

Surface profile

High pressure water blaster equipments will not produce a surface profile as such. Weakened steel might erode, resulting in metal loss, but the surface profile exposed after blasting will have been produced by earlier surface preparation or corrosion.

There are a lot of good reasons to clean and maintain tanks that are storing wastewater, chemicals or petroleum (oil). Health and safety probably tops the list.  

Over time heavy metals and chemicals can contaminate storage tank cleaning equipments certain types of fluids. Or in tanks holding petroleum, sludge can begin to build up. Also in storage tanks acids, caustics and other hazardous materials can form on the walls. Types of tanks that can be cleaned with pressure washers:

To clean most of these tanks, the contents are usually emptied and stored elsewhere. (or if they are totally contaminated, they will be properly disposed of. ) the insides of the tanks are first scraped out to remove and sludge or build-up along the walls, and then the pressure washer comes in. With the voluminous size of some tanks a simple hose will simply just not work too well. Water of about 220-degrees fahrenheit with a pressure of about 3000psi should be effective in the cleaning of the tank floors, ceilings and walls. Then after the tank is clean, a vacuum truck can be utilized to pump out the water. Once clean and contaminant-free, the tank can be refilled with old or new contents.  

Aside from contamination, there are some other reasons why storage tank washing is needed. For one, sometimes tankers in transport cause dangerous spills on roadways. This means that there could be explosive and/or hazardous material everywhere. In this case, pressure washers can be used to not only clean out the empty or even half-destroyed tank (to prevent more leaks as the tank is moved), but also to clean off the roadways. Other reasons a tank would need to be cleaned would be if they are being emptied of their contents to be sold, cleaning out tanks for renovations, making sure they are clean prior to scheduled inspections, if they are being disposed of (you do not want the chemicals to get into the groundwater) or finally, if they are being moved.  

Because of the hazardous waste and materials that can build up in tanks, owners of these tanks should indeed invest in a pressure washer to do routine maintenance and storage tank washing. However, some prefer not to do this work on their own and this is why many pressure washing contractors may cater to industries such as this. If you are a contractor looking for this kind of work, targeting petroleum distributors, port authorities, government groups, public works departments and the like all use storage tanks and could be a great way to build business.  

Just keep in mind using protective gear, while performing storage tank washing that contain dangerous vapors, and be sure to take extra precaution when working around explosive materials.

Renovation and replacement of deteriorated concrete bridges, substructures, and roadways are of vital concern to highway and bridge maintenance personnel. Conventional methods for removal of deteriorated concrete traditionally include jack hammering. In recent times, however, there has been a decline in the use of this equipment, probable reasons being that new alternatives have emerged and its following disadvantages.

• Unnecessary removal of sound concrete along with bad concrete

• Vibration generates micro fractures in sound concrete

• Micro fracturing of sound concrete due to vibration

• Unintentional damage to rebar

• Uncertainty as to complete removal of deteriorated concrete and corrosive chlorides

• Vibration injuries in fingers and arms of the operator.

• It is time consuming

• Dust formation and noise level are also high

The hydro-demolition process is successfully utilized to remove deteriorated concrete, leaving sound concrete with a rough profile, perfect for bonding the newly poured overlay. Hydro demolition is a relatively new method of removing select portions of a hardened concrete structure.

 

Hydro-demolition is a technology that uses extremely high pressure water jet that is capable of removing concrete while not damaging the rebar. The practical application of this technique makes it an extremely effective and efficient method of concrete removal. This is due to two main factors, one being the direct impact of the water jet on the surface. The other is the porous nature of concrete, the high pressure water is forced into the tiny cavities and cracks within the concrete mass, causing it to fracture and split.

Hence, this high pressure water jet equipment breaks up concrete by disintegrating the cement matrix between aggregates. The demolishing effect can be tightly controlled to a desired level of removal, ranging from light scarification of the surface to deep penetration of the structural element. The use of the hydro demolition process has several advantages over conventional concrete removal methods, such as jack hammering.

 

Advatnages of hydro-demolition

• Selective material removal the variable parameters of the technique, water pressure, jet size and speed of application, make it possible to demolish and remove concrete in a very precise and controlled way. These variables enable selective removal of deteriorated or de-laminated concrete, as the jet stream penetrates the cracks and faults in the degraded material more quickly, leaving the sound concrete intact.

These capabilities make it a very suitable method of enabling repairs to concrete structures, as it allows accurate removal of material, leaving the sub-structure and steel reinforcement intact if required.

• A rough, irregular surface profile is created to provide an excellent mechanical bond for all types of repair material
